It’s fall in Southern Ohio. Leaves are on the ground, a chill is in the air, and the holidays are around the corner. Probably the last thing on your mind is your landscape and the lush beautiful trees of summer. But with winter around the corner, now is the best time to plan to prune, trim or perhaps remove some unsightly trees in your yard.
Trees enter a dormancy state and slow down growth and production until the next spring. During this stage it is very beneficial to the kind of maintenance that will guarantee a vibrant and healthy yard next year.
Pruning, trimming and removal during this period is beneficial for a several reasons.
1. Preserve tree structure. During prime season in the summer, trees have beautiful full branches with leaves, bulbs and fruits. This often makes it hard to properly distinguish whether a tree is truly healthy or not. In the winter this is not the case. Trees are bare, and their actual trunk and limb health can be monitored better. Unhealthy branches and rotting bark are easier to see when there is no obstruction from leaves, fruits or bulbs.
2. Enabling spring beauty. We’ve all heard that April showers bring May flowers. That doesn’t just mean flowers on the ground; it also refers to trees and shrubs. Tree production and growth can be hindered if there are too many dead or rotten branches to overcome. April showers don’t bring flowers if those flowers can’t grow.
3. Preventing disease spread. April showers can also bring mold, insects, mildew and many diseases to your trees. Diseases in Southern Ohio include Powdery Mildew, Needlecast diseases, Thousand Cankers, Apple Scab, Cedar Apple Rust and many more. All of these diseases are capable of damaging a tree beyond repair. That’s why it is beneficial to do proper pruning and removal so the trees can be healthy enough to prevent these diseases from spreading or killing other trees.
4. Less tree stress. With trees in a dormant state during winter, any type of pruning or removal will not trigger new growth. New growth can lead to an increase in bacterial or disease formation which can hinder additional growth when the weather warms up. Pruning in winter gives time for wounds to close and prevents bacteria and disease from entering the tree.
5. Preventing snow and storm damage. The first snow of the year brings the excitement of looking out the window and seeing the snow and ice on tree limbs. That excitement can quickly turn to dread if those limbs and branches are laying on the ground because they were too weak to support the weight of the ice and snow. Worse yet is if those trees land on your deck, new landscaping or even your home. Those nightmares can be avoided with some prevention before those storms come.
We commonly think of trees as important parts of spring, summer and fall enjoyment. But those trees won’t be the centerpieces of your yard or your outdoor activities like barbecues or hide-and-seeks without proper care. Taking some time for tree maintenance during the winter will help ensure enjoyment, peace and relaxation when the weather gets warmer.
